Disney College Program History
The Disney College Program made its debut in 1981. In the early days, the Disney College Program consisted of slightly more than 200 students from 30 schools working in our one theme park, the Magic Kingdom® Park. Since its debut, more than 45,000 students have participated representing hundreds of schools, and each of the program components (Living, Learning and Earning) has evolved to create the opportunity of a lifetime!
Living
Our participants live in student-exclusive complexes on our multicultural campus. We also offer on-site staff and support for our students, including a 24-hour confidential voicemail system, College and International Program leaders and Professional Interns, and a security staff to assist students 365 days per year!
Learning
The Disney College Program has made major enhancements to its education curriculum this year. In an effort to add some flexibility for students and allow them more opportunities to earn credit for their participation in the Disney College Program, we are raising awareness of the many instructor-led and computer-based learning opportunities in which your students can participate to earn college credit while they are Walt Disney World® Resort Cast Members in the Disney College Program. These activities are offered in addition to the eight Disney College Program courses we present in our classrooms. The American Council on Education has recommended each of our eight Disney College Program courses for three credits each.
Earning
We have designed a "flexible" role, allowing some of our students to experience multiple aspects of a particular field through "hopping" among selected operating areas. We also created professional roles for successful Disney College Program graduates, allowing students to utilize their education and their Disney experience to launch their careers here or elsewhere. The Walt Disney World® Resort has grown through the years as well. Today, we have four theme parks, more than 20 resorts, two water parks and the Downtown Disney® Area, which is a dining, entertainment and retail complex. Our growth led to new and exciting learning and earning opportunities for our Disney College Program students.
We have always been proud of the Disney College Program, and today, our program is better than ever!
